Do yourself a favor taco fans and just get 3 steak (carne asada). Guac is good but needs lime and they have all kinds of nice Mexican beers. Pacifico on tap. Warning - stay away from all pastor related activities

My husband has a carne asada tacos and I thought the meat was pretty dry. I had the chicken burrito and that was awesome! We also got some guacamole which was probably the best I've had! When I didn't care for was the fact that you had to pay extra for lettuce and cheese on the tacos, cheese maybe, but lettuce? Overall I would go back for sure!

I've been a long time customer of Taco Trio and a big supporter. However, recently our meals have been below average and the service has been poor. The staff seems to be rushing through orders and making frequent mistakes. The latest example tonight was a carne asada burrito that I ordered with mixed beans and sour cream (charged extra). It came with pinto beans only and no sour cream. The tortilla was also soggy and torn in several places making it difficult to eat. My wife's meal also included sour cream after we ordered it without. She's sensitive to dairy and was disappointed to have to scrape the top of her sopes into the trash. I hope the owner/manager takes notice and steps in to help their staff realize that the quality that Taco Trio is known for is more important than quantity or speed. If I wanted a cheap, quick, not very tasty meal there are chain restaurants that do it better.

So I came here after a very lackluster meal at another Mexican joint to hopefully find a much better restaurant and luckily I did. Taco Trio is great! From the moment I stepped inside, you could tell it was a happening place. Restaurant was completely full and there was a line of about 2-3 groups ahead. Of course, it being a quick service type restaurant, the wait was very short. The interior looked festive and bright. The menu was on a large blackboard and they had an extensive salsa bar. I think they had like 12 different salsas ranging from mango to classics. When you order, they give you two salsa containers. I wish they have you more as I wanted to try them all, but I guess I just have to come back. I ordered the carne asada burrito and it was fantastic. It came with a mix of pinto and black beans, Mexican rice, salsa, and nice chewy beef flank pieces that were perfectly marinated. I've had good burritos in my hometown of LA, and this place would certainly be able to complete with those restaurants. This will be my go to Mexican stop for sure in the Portland area. I'm going to try the other meats and a aqua frescas next time.

Met an old friend here for lunch during a recent visit to Portland & was blown away by how delicious the tacos were. For what the venue lacks in ambiance, it more than makes up for in flavor and authenticity. Best tacos I've had in New England! Just go ahead & order the three taco deal. I combined the pescado & the pastor, and they were both incredible. Loved the soft corn tortillas too.

You can't get better Mexican than this place. It's super authentic. The guacamole is some of the best I have ever had. It's worth getting a large because it's that good. I am super impressed by their quesadilla, they have the best in town. GET THE STEAK. Their steak is so tender and seasoned to perfection. I tend to go over board on their salsa. But in my opinion the green salsa is the best! I love their enchiladas verdes is so yummy. It's perfect portion and always well cooked. I had their burrito for the first time the other day and was really pleased by how tasty it is. The people who work there are always super friendly and really quick with the food. Nothing about this place is bad. I can't believe people go to El rayo when this place exist.

Locals swear by the quality and authenticity of this taco joint... So, checked it out.. and we were all quite impressed and happy with the meal. Though some Yelpers say it's a "hole in the wall," I feel that if there is more than 6 tables by windows, walls and the general eating area, it's a step up from a hole in the wall. It's just a relaxed, laid-back, casual eatery with no frills. Why no frills? All the staff's time and effort go directly into making the dozen or so salsas and guacamole fresh every day. In addition, when you order your food, that's when they make it. The menu is extensive: sopes, burritos, plates/ enchiladas, quesadillas and tacos. Really, there's something for everyone. The salsas are a rare treat with the array and labels that identify what they are and how spicy, too. Be warned, hot by Taco Trio's standards is just about the hottest you can have without burning through your taco... anything that is habanero based and pureed, it's going to be close to... eye-watering, mouth-burning, sweat-inducing heat for a good 3-4 minutes even after you're done eating. The salsas are beautiful - mango, pineapple, tomatilo/ salsa verde, pico de gallo, habanero, and many others. It's fun enough to pick your own salsas, I really don't need anything more fun than that at a taco joint. If you need more salsa, you'll have to pay, which is fair - can you imagine how long it takes to make all those salsas? If you get a medium or hot salsa and fill your plastic cup... it's unlikely you will use each of those cupfuls for each taco... just saying... unless you like a fire-enflamed dining experience. For the guacamole, it is as good as it can get when made fresh in large amounts. The amounts are not massive that you can order, so be aware that 2 oz. is the salsa cup size and 4 oz. is, well, twice that. It's still plenty though, since you'll probably eat a trio of tacos or an order of enchiladas or a burrito plate or a mix of everything if sharing with your fellow table of diners. The chips are also tasty- yellow corn, freshly fried, thin style, salted. Note: they probably fry everything in one fryer, so if you have sensitive taste buds/ stomachs, you may opt out (i.e. on the menu, they have fried fish tacos). The menu at the restaurant labels what is vegetarian, vegan and gluten free. They can make many items gluten-free, so if you're so inclined, you can ask. Beware of the long line behind you, though. This place is hopping - and for good reason. You can order horchata, fruit-based drinks like hibiscus or tamarind, a variety of bottled beer and mojitos or margaritas. For a small operation, this place delivers in spades. If I weren't inclined to stuff my face with guacamole, salsa and the amazing champinones tacos (vegan and gluten free), I would've gone back... when I am fat one day, this place will be my go to for every lunch for a week's visit in Portland. Delicious, fresh, satisfying. Plus, the staff is so nice despite the crazy busy atmosphere!

After a week of traveling and spending quite a bit on food, we looked for an affordable lunch spot that offered unique food at a good price. This place felt authentic, local, and divey. I enjoyed a Carnitas Taco and a Pastor taco. The chips also went well with their pineapple salsa. The pineapple in this salsa was grilled (or cooked somehow) which made it have a really good and unique taste. Had it been a bit cleaner and more organized I would have given it a 5.

I love tacos. I love tacos so much that I aspire to be whatever the sommelier equivalent for tacos is. I've been eager to try Taco Trio for some time now, and a visit was going to be my reward for making it to the gym. The only thing going through my head while I was pounding out a few miles on the treadmill was 'Taco. Taco. Taco...' I came here on one of the coldest nights of the year to-date, at about 7pm on a Thursday night. I rounded the corner in my car and was surprised to see how festive the place looked on an otherwise dark and desolate South Portland street. Parking was easy, and I secured a spot right across from the restaurant. When I entered, I was also surprised at the bright, warm and busy interior. The seats at the booths, tables and wall counters were almost all filled. Celia Cruz' 'Guantanamera' was blasting through the speaker and there was a line 7 or 8 people deep in front of the ordering counter. When I eventually got to the front of the counter, the cashier/server was very pleasant and personable, and took my order of three tacos with a smile. Since the name of the restaurant is 'Taco Trio', I thought ordering any less than three tacos would be bad luck. I ordered the carne asada, carnitas and chorizo tacos. I have mixed feelings about this experience. The good: - Salsa bar! My order of tacos came with tortilla chips, and I was happy to see pineapple and mango salsas among the 9 or 12 varieties. - The atmosphere. As I mentioned before, it's warm, friendly and festive inside. - The price. Tacos are 3/$10, and with a bottle of water my order came out to about $12. That's a good price for a post-gym dinner. The concerns: - The tacos. I don't know if I came on a bad night, but all three of the tacos I tried were very dry. The carne asada beef was tasty but a bit over-salted. It was also dripping with grease (weird combo of dry on the inside and dripping with grease!) and ran down my hands as I was eating it. The corn tortillas were also dry. I hope this is a one-time issue, but it's strange that during such a busy time my food would turn out like that. - The seating. Usually when I make a solo visit to a restaurant, I like to sit in the back of the establishment - like Aragorn (son of Arathorn) lurking at a table in the back of 'The Prancing Pony' - and glare at the other patrons as I eat. Unfortunately most of the seating is right in the middle, and so people queueing to order are essentially hovering above you watching you eat, if you are unfortunate enough not to grab a booth or a wall counter seat. I wish they offered a different, more intimate seating arrangement. Even given my personal experience, the overwhelmingly positive reviews - and the potential I see in this place - is certainly enough for me to give it another shot in a few months.

This place makes a damn good carne asada burrito. The salsa bar holds a variety of options including spicy, mild, fruity, and smokey. The chips were thin, hot, and crisp. Taco Trio isn't just good by Portland, ME, standards. It was good period. I will definitely be back to try the rest of their salsas. Tip: there is also plenty of street parking in the surrounding area.

Ooooo-eeeee!!! So good it makes me feel fine as cherry wine just typing about it. The food is consistently straight daggers. Have yet to have anything after multiple, multiple visits that wasn't entirely first rate. Except occasionally my company, but I didn't choose my girlfriends friends. You know? Maybe you don't.

This was absolutely disgusting. I ate one bite and that was too much. The food was dry, tasteless (well besides the taste of gross) over priced, and the add ons like the "fresh" mango salsa yeah I'm not dumb it was canned and in sugar. The sour cream completely watered down. The service was pathetic and arrogant. Location run down and too small. Surprised a small place like that could fit a mixture of arrogant, gross, dry and pompous in that little closet of a space. My fiancée ate (after my one bite) the rest of the detest food ever. As we are leaving I looked at him and told him I would have eaten a cheaper and better meal at a gas station. They were supposed to be my last "good " meal before my wedding. Yeah I'm still looking. Oh yeah there was no cheese on my taco who does that? Oh yeah you arrogant people and the "best taco Mexican restaurant"

So cheap and so delicious. Salsa bar alone is worth the trip. Only have I once had poor service and I attribute that to the young girl manning the counter that day. I can't even hold that against them because the food was so delicious. TRY THE CHURROS

Second visit was much less pleasing than the first. We stopped in on a Saturday for lunch and the place was a cluster, to put it politely. My DC ordered a burrito plate and asked for no lettuce, the first thing the woman said it doesn't come with lettuce. He pointed out to her that it says on the menu so please, no lettuce. She said you had to pay extra for it, it doesn't come standard. Sure enough, his burrito plate comes out with lettuce. While I understand it is dive, I didn't even want to sit down the place was a mess, it seemed like no one had been out to tidy up the dining area since the day before.

This place is definitely a hole in the wall but don't let that steer you away. The tacos were some of the best I've had in recent memory. I got the trio and chose ground chorizo, carne asada and chicken with mole. On point! There were other options like burritos and tamales if you're not quite feeling a taco. The salsa bar was a little weird and could probably use a sneeze guard but if you're the adventurous type you'll be pleased with the options. Everything from mild to spicy to pretty damn hot! If you're in the South Portland area, do yourself a solid and swing on by to grab a bite to eat. Shop small!

Best Mexican food around. I used to think their tacos were the best until I had the burrito which was delicious, but I can get great burritos at a few places so I tried the rojas enchiladas and they are by far my favorite because nobody does the enchiladas as good as taco trio. Can't wait for the Forest Ave. Location to open.

Y'all, I lived in San Antonio for years before moving to Maine. I thought I would never have decent tacos again, but I was wrong. This place is amazing. I love the sopes and the salsa bar is great. For each plate you order you get two little cups for the salsa bar. Choices include salsa verde, pico de gallo, salsa chipotle, pineapple, mango, etc. It can be a little tight, but the food makes up for it!

Amazing food and friendly people, what more do you want!! I've been to taquerias all over and this place is legit. Best on the east coast!!

Wonderful! Been a few times and always had a cheery, delicious experience. SOMEBODY TELL ME WHAT IS IN THE HABANERO SALSA. The salsa bar is cool but that habanero sauce is the best thing that has maybe ever happened to me so if anyone knows why it's so good.. please enlighten me. Thank you.

Most Mexican restaurants overload their meals with melted cheese. For those of us who have a love/hate relationship with dairy, finding menu options can be tough. At Taco Trio, you don't need to worry about drowning in melted cheese. There are plenty of options where cheese isn't part of the equation. I highly recommend the tacos which come with your choice of meats, onion and cilantro. They are simply dressed to let you really taste the flavors on the meat. Once you make your selection, you'll then get your choice of salsas from the self-serve salsa bar. There are a number of options from melt your brain hot to pleasantly mild. This place is quickly becoming my favorite Mexican place around. The food is simple, inexpensive and really delicious. Be aware that on weekend evenings, you may have a bit of a wait because the line to order will be long.

Cool little taco shop. I like the salsa bar they have set up in the dining room. My tamale wasn't great but the tacos were all pretty good. Not sure I would order the goat again though because it had a pretty big piece of chewy fat in it. I would definitely go back again and try the rest of the menu!

Simple fresh ingredients, inexpensive large portions and margaritas in plastic cups. South Portland Maine? Really? Yes really. Pick any three tacos for $9, includes chips and and a salsa bar with a huge selection. With 16 wildly different salsas. I had a fish, chorizo, and carnitas taco. All unique and yummy. The fish taco in particular had a lime cream sauce that was intensely enjoyable. This is what I call west coast road food. Affordable everyday great tastes!

We checked it out last year and we refuse to get our tacos and burritos anywhere else in the area. Such a small place and the staff is always helpful and friendly.

Probably the best Mexican food north of the border! Always fresh and always good. The salsa bar is particularly awesome...mild, medium, and hot selections for your choosing! Order in or take out, fresh is fresh and this place is the best!

The stars speak for themselves, I'm a fan. I popped into Taco Trio one night after work, searching for a quick dinner on the go. Parking was a little tricky for me, but wasn't too bad once a few spots opened on the street. I ordered a steak burrito and the woman behind the counter was very friendly, but seemed to be in a hurry. She had already told me the price before I finished saying "burrito". I added chips and guac on the side and if she hadn't rushed me along, I had planned to get guacamole in my burrito as well. I LOVE guacamole. The burrito came with chips, so I only had to pay for the extra guac. Not bad, eh? The salsa bar was cool, but looked like it hadn't been replenished all day. Not sure if that's a typical thing for this place, but it was around dinner time and there was no mango salsa and about three pineapple chunks left in the pineapple salsa container. However there wasn't much time to fret because my food came out very quickly and was prepared right in front of me, which I thought was pretty awesome. For just the burrito and side of small guacamole (like REALLY small), my bill was almost $15. That seemed a little steep to me (being the broke college student that I am), but man was it delicious. I couldn't even wait until I got home to sink my teeth into that 'rito. The marinated steak was juicy and filled with flavor. The only "complaint" I had about the food was the beans hadn't been drained enough and the burrito was a little drippy and soggy toward the end. There also weren't a lot of chips and the burrito wasn't record size for the price, but it was the perfect amount of food for me and kept me very full for a long time. Did I say that it was worth it? It defiitely was. If I'm ever in the area and looking for a quick, good bite to eat, Taco Trio you'll be on my list!

The burritos and tacos are amazing, but go for the tamales! I dig the salsa bar, too. Is there a better Mexican dive in Maine? Taco Trio reminds me of some of my favorite places in California. The staff is friendly, too.

Typical "hole in the wall" spot. The outside doesn't look great, but the good inside is def worth going to check out. Great pricing for a good amount of food. They also have a good selection of sauces to dip and spread on the tacos. The quesadilla was huge! Enjoy!

  • AJ P.

Probably the best Mexican Food place around Portland. Tasty burritos. Pretty good street tacos. It surprises me how easily some other places can mess up a taco. All you need is the tortilla, meat, onion, and cilantro - a little squirt of lime and the salsa of your choosing and you pretty much have perfection. The carne asada, pollo asado, and barbacoa are pretty consistent in flavor. The carnitas is, sadly, hit or miss - sometimes it can be overly dry, sometimes it doesn't have those nice little bits of crunch.

So glad we stopped in! Sooo delicious! I wish we could pack the place up and take it home! Tamales! Yum!

The place is a little hidden gem. I had a chicken quesadilla and my husband had two tacos( el pastor and carnitas). We both enjoyed it. I loved the salsa bar, especially the grilled pineapple salsa. Deliciousness!! Super affordable!

DELICOUS. Holy smokes the Carne Asada is SO good. Next time I think we'll order pick up and take it to the park, but other than the meh seating we're definitely coming back!

Great service, delicious salsa, and a full menu. The only draw back is the tortillas are very gummy as they aren't fresh, but instead steamed.

Had to keep our coats on, but worth it. Had every kind of taco available. My faves are fish and the mushroom onion jalapeño tacos. Everyone has to eat here, at least once.

Fish Tacos account for about 22% of my food intake, and Taco Trio has some badass Fish Tacos! This place is the kinda of local joint where you love the food and love to support the business. From my experiences, you can't go wrong here. Their salsa bar is diverse and satisfying weather you like sweeter or hotter salsas. Their selection of Mexican beers pair perfectly with the tacos or a quesadilla! Taco Trio is a great option to get a quick bite to eat by yourself or go with a group. I'm looking forward to my next trip and exploring the menu a bit more.

I'm sure someone has written a charming and insightful article about the translation of Mexican food in the USA, so go google that, or accept the short story that this is New England and not a strip mall in Florida. Mexican fusion? Is that a thing? It's exhausting to think about. This place is exactly what I've come to expect from Mexican restaurants, and worthy of a stop. I enjoyed my spinach quesadilla, even with its molten cheese/spinach juice burning a path down my puppet lines. Beans and rice were fresh. The food was good. The staff was pleasant but not overly helpful. Tables needed to be bussed and cleaned. Essential counter service was fast. I'd do take out here again.

  • Marge W.

This place is very casual, sort of similar to a burger joint. Awesome tacos with many different meat/veggie options. I got the three tacos for $10 option; the carnitas was great but the pollo con mole was my favorite. Make sure you look at the diagram of the salsa bar so you know what you're getting in terms of spicy. The sauces can get really hot!!

  • Leah D.

I have heard tales of Taco Trio long before I went there. Some call in the best Mexican food in Maine others the best Mexican food they've ever had. My verdict: it's good. I got the fish tacos which were excellent and a margarita which was... Okay. The fish was crispy and the double layered tortilla was perfect, though I wish there was lime to add some freshness. The person I was with ordered chicken enchiladas and I think they were pretty sub par. Though they have a wonderful salsa bar with a mixture of both hot, sweet, and savory options. Taco Trio itself is a bit if a hassle to get to unless you live right in that area of South Portland. While it was good it wasn't mind blowing and I because of the inconvenience to get to I probably won't frequent there.

Loved the atmosphere here and it was packed on a Thursday night. Still managed to get a window-side table. No table service, you go up to the counter and order your food and drink (there is beer and margaritas!) and they call your name. Salsa bar was super cool with lots of various options. Everything seemed fresh and authentic Mexican, salsa music to boot. Until I got my food. I judge a Mexican joint on their salsa and fish tacos. Salsa was good! Fish tacos were... Weird. Corn tortillas grilled nicely, fried fish was good, tasted fresh, but I'm not a fan of fried fish in tacos. Then there were big chunks of cabbage with oregano on it? Topped with mayonnaise... Not sour cream. Menu said cilantro, did not taste cilantro. The flavor combinations here were odd and unappealing. Not to mention I felt like I was eating a whole lot of saturated fat when I was trying to get some healthy fish tacos. I will definitely be back to try other options that don't include meat. I guess fish tacos just aren't their thing...

Taco Trio is the best!!! Literally, the best. The pescado tacos, the chorizo tacos and the verde enchiladas are my go-tos - the bomb.com everytime!!!!

I'm a displaced Texan living in Maine. Taco Trio keeps me from despairing during the long, cold winters. It's the only place I've found in New England that has proper tacos, with real, fresh corn tortillas made by someone who knows what she's doing. The carne asada are my favorite, and the salsas are the real deal. I LOVE the habanero salsa; Most New Englanders like bland food and it's really hard to find truly hot salsa that has the right blend of spices. Taco Trio also carries a good range of Jarritos and they make fresh aguas frescas. It's a little expensive ($9 for 3 tacos and chips), but masa harina is not exactly readily available here, so it's understandable that their overhead is high. My only complaint is the chips, which are thicker than I like them, but that's a Texas thing. They aren't bad; they just aren't great. But compared to their competition...there is no comparison. If you're craving a taste of home between trips to Austin or El Paso, this is the place.

I'm not Mexican, but as a Salvadoran, I believe I have the taste buds to recognize when I've just eaten some delicious tacos. Also, I reaaaaally love tacos. Nothing beats cooking them yourself at home, but if I were to dine out - Taco Trio is it. Of all the cities I have lived in, these are my most favorite tacos. I haven't had the burrito yet. The open burrito (no tortilla) is good, but can get watery (strain those beans!). The coconut flan is decent though I wish a more traditional option was available too and that salsa bar is perfection. Who knew that here in Maine, I would find the best version of my favorite food. We've lived in Portland for almost 5 months and no joke that we've come here almost every week. Almost. Thanks Maine!

I am not sure how this place got so much praise. soggy, cold enchiladas and overpriced margaritas served in small plastic cups were the highlights of our dining experience. The paper plates came apart by the time we were done eating, and the margaritas were made from a mix. one of the worst dining experiences ever.

Great food! I always think I can eat three tacos but I can't. They're super fast so just order more as you if you're still hungry. I also suggest the burrito bowls!

The only authentic mexican in the Casco Bay & Portland area. Having been spoiled with great mexican good in San Diego and even in Memphis, good tacos and burritos are hard to find here in Maine. Glad to have found this gem in South Portland!

I'm basing this on a recent visit with the boyfriend, who misses the food from back home in MX. Carne asada, barbacoa, and some goat. Not bad, not perfect, and $3.95 for a single taco. Horchata was a bit powdery, from a mix I assume. It is Maine though, so this is the best you're going to get considering that it's pretty authentic.

Stopped in because of the positive reviews and was not disappointed. I had three different Tacos: Fish, Pork and Steak all were different and very good. When eating the food it tastes authentic and not overly Americanized like a lot of "Mexican" food is. There are a good number of Salsas to choose from and you can sever your self which I like. This is also a great place to stop in for a snack. You can stop by and get a taco for under $4 and be on your way in a few min.

Yesterday was a beautiful day, and a beautiful day calls for TACOS AND BEER. (Sadly I had exams to study for, so no beer.) Taco Trio hit the spot (my hunger spot) with their variety of mexican food and drink. I split an order of enchiladas and tacos, and the tacos were the clear winner. The enchilada sauce was a bit watery, and most of the meat was lying on top of the cute little rolls. The fish taco was fine by me, but my gal pal thought they tasted a bit like fish sticks. The soft cabbage toppings slightly threw me off too. I tried some of the steak taco, and that one was tasty! A tiny bit on the dry side, but the seasoning definitely made up for it. Anyways, my FAVORITE part was their VARIETY OF SALSA!!! I'd order chips next time just to eat more salsa. They have your typical pico de gallo, but what really stood out was the grilled pineapple and mango salsas! The mango was absolutely delicious and I couldn't help but put it on all my food. Finally, their drink selection is pretty awesome too. They have jarritos in multiple flavors, Mexicola from Maine Root co., and a handful of Mexican beers behind the counter. This is definitely a great spot for a relaxing afternoon! If only I had more time for relaxing afternoons...

Excellent Mexican food CAN be found in Maine, and it's found at Taco Trio! I grew up in Los Angeles area of southern California where authentic Mexican food was on every other corner, and Taco Trio brings me back there!

Having lived a large portion of my life "away" in balmy and exotic locales such as Indiana, Detroit, Las Vegas, and Memphis, I sometimes like to playfully grumble about Maine's white-breadedness. When I have a powerful need for some delicious tacos, that playful grumbling can descend into all-out abuse. Let's just say that I get grumpy when my need for tacos can't be sated. But now there is no more reason to grumble, gripe, and complain because Taco Trio is here! This little restaurant in downtown South Portland is home to some really delicious tacos. Though I am typically partial to carnitas tacos when I visit taquerias elsewhere, TT's true talent is for the pastor. They also have the distinction of being the first Mexican place in all our travels (that includes Mexico, btw) where my husband was enticed to try seafood tacos. Their fish tacos are nearly as divine as their pastor. Get the 3 taco deal ($9 - get it? Taco trio?) and you will be stuffed for hours. The only thing standing between them and a five star rating is that they don't have taqueria sauce. If you are a connoisseur of tacos, you know what I mean.

I went to Taco Trio recently thanks to my brother's craving for Mexican food and all of the stellar reviews I've heard. This place did not disappoint! There's no dedicated lot but plenty of parking nearby. It's a super small place where you order at the counter and seat yourselves -- not exactly a fancy dining establishment but it gets the job done. The menu is fairly large and everything my table got -- 4 of us total, including 2 vegetarians -- was delicious. The unique part that I loved was their salsa bar -- easily 10+ different salsas of varying flavors and spiciness to choose from. Awesome! This place got PACKED, too -- right after we ordered and sat down there was quickly a line out the door. We agreed that on our next trip we'd order takeout and sit in Mill Creek Park or take our burritos to Fort Williams!

Every wonderful thing you've ever heard about Taco Trio is absolutely true and then some. If you don't come here, you're missing out on possibly one of the most original Mexican dining experiences in the state of Maine. I went with a friend who lived in southern California and knows good Mexican food, and she said the place was pretty spot-on in what they were offering. Their menu has your basic "wrap + meat" options, which is - according to my friend - pretty standard and authentically Mexican. The prices are reasonable, the beer is cold, and the salsa bar is FAN-FLIPPING-TABULOUS (my life would be exponentially better if someone could just follow me around with that little cart of fun)! All of that being said - I'll NEVER come back here again. Weren't expecting that twist, were you? Simply put: this is NOT a place for vegetarians. When we first arrived, the friend I was with asked me multiple times if I wanted to leave - even she noticed that a) they seemed to be cooking meat on every available surface, and b) from a vegetarian's perspective, their menu was unaccomodating and lackluster. But I had heard SO. MANY. GREAT. things about this place, that I knew we had to stay. I needed to see if Taco Trio could bring the magic. While their food didn't, their customer service certainly did. When it was my turn to order, I asked the younger girl behind the counter, "What's good that's vegetarian?" She grimaced. Never a good sign. "I mean really, there's only three options: a rice and bean burritos, a cheese quesadilla, or the mushroom and spinach tacos." So, basically, all things I could make myself or get at Taco Bell. "What do people usually get?" I inquired. She said, "The mushroom tacos." I decided to get that, and while she was putting in my order she said, "I'm a vegetarian. I've never thought to ask a restaurant what they suggest. That's a good idea. I usually get the rice and bean burrito when I'm working here, though." RED FLAG. When a vegetarian who works at a restaurant tells you what they usually get to eat there, to me that means they've tried the other things off the menu (in this case, all two of them). "Okay, wait a second," I said, "Why don't YOU get the mushroom tacos if that's what everyone else gets?" She shrugged, "They're kind of boring." Wait... so they're kind of boring tasting on an already (for a vegetarian) boring menu? "Is it too late to switch to the rice and bean burrito?" I asked her. "No, not at all," she smiled graciously, then generously asked me if I wanted beans or guacamole in it. "How's this?" I responded, "Pretend that you're putting in the order FOR YOURSELF. How would you normally eat it? I trust you." She lit up and excitedly started writing stuff down, "This is fun! I've never done this before!" You know when someone you care about is SO excited or SO happy about something that - even though you may not be - because they are you are for them? Because of this younger girl's genuine excitement, my initial discontent at the place was immediately washed away. Now THAT'S some awesome customer service. She processed my order and before I could take two steps away from the counter, another girl was bringing my food over. How impressive is that? Maybe that sort of speed isn't always the case here, but it continued to build on the excellent experience I was beginning to have. Unfortunately, my burrito was nothing special, though I was stunned at how much delicious guacamole there seemed to be in it. As a matter of fact, hours later and I can't remember anything about the burrito minus the gauc, that's how unmemorable it was. My friend had the carne asada tacos and loved every bite, though. Actually, everyone in the tiny restaurant seemed to love every bite of whatever they were eating. Which is essentially why I gave this place a four stars: the customer service rocks, the salsa bar was the best thing that ever happened to me (that day), and it seems to be THE place in the Portland area for the most authentic burritos... if you're not a vegetarian, that is.

Taco Trio is an excellent place to go for anything you're craving. They have great options including vegetarian choices, fish, and meat. You can come here and get something different every time. The salsa bar does make this place stand out. You get two little cups to fill with whichever salsa you want including mango, salsa verde, picante, mild, etc. Your meal also comes with a side of chips. They also offer beer on draft and have some speciality sodas. I absolutely recommend giving this place a try. My go to are the fish tacos or veggie quesadillas. The service can be a little slow so call ahead for takeout or plan to wait for a bit (reassuring to know they're making it fresh!)

One of the worst things about relocating to Maine from southern California was the loss of really good, really authentic Mexican food. After trying Taco Trio, this loss has been lessened a little. The foods fresh, the salsa bar / trolley thingie is awesome and the service was pleasant. My carne asada tacos satisfied my craving for tasty Mexican food and being able to order a Tecate almost made me cry (I really love Tecate). I recommend Taco Trio to anyone looking for yummy Mexican food option. Note, don't judge the place based on the decor...the whole in the wall look lends itself to a more authentic Mexican-style in my book!

Decent option for Mexican food in Maine. Hey, I get it, this isn't the mission. There isn't a taco stand on every street corner in Portland (I wish there was). But this is one cuisine that is underrepresented in this state. It makes me sad. I LOVE Mexican food. I'm giving this place three stars because I know what good Mexican food tastes like but for Maine, this is probably as good as it gets. There are actual Mexican people cooking the food! Finally! The menu has a lot of options for people without dietary restrictions (read: carnivores). I don't eat meat but I do eat fish so I opted for the fish tacos. Not the best fish tacos ever, but good enough to eat without regret. My favorite part of the meal was the salsa bar. They have a variety of options for a variety of taste buds. Mild, medium, hot, fruit, green...they've got you covered. And the guacamole was pretty good as well. Next time I'm trying a burrito. Yes, there will be a next time.

All that I can say is WOW! What a fantastic taqueria! The most authentic Mexican food that I've had outside of Mexico. This is not South-West, it's real Mexican. The carnitas are great with the fresh salsa roja or salsa verde. The carne assada tacos are spectacular. The guacamole is fresh and simply wonderful. Since the first time we tried it, we have been back three times... ...in four days. And it's an hour from our house...

Great salsa bar. I ordered a steak burrito and it was delicious. Most orders come with chips so you can sample the salsas. My wife ordered a fish taco and a pork taco. The pork was a little bland. We enjoyed this place and will return.

We love Taco Trio. we go there once a week (not kidding) The grilled chicken burrito is the old stand by. Yes, it will feed two people. Lets put this excitement into context. first things first, Portland offers very little in the way of good Mexican food. But SoPo has Taco Trio! They have beer. They have a great salsa bar and if it were not 15 F outside, you might think you were in LA. They actually make proper tacos. The staff is always friendly, no matter how slammed they are. The wait is never too long. if you have an order for take out, you will not have enough time for a beer. Everyone deserves a day of rest, but it is sad they are closed on Sundays.

Really good authentic Mexican street food. Tons of great salsas. They even have goat tacos, which I love. Vegetarian and gluten free options. I love the sopes, too. They have horchata and always a flavor of agua fresca and both are delicious.

The food was excellent. I only had the carnitas tacos to eat and they were on part with what you can find in southern California. They make an excellent mojito. The prices are really good and the drinks are cheap. The only suggestion I have is to clean the tables and floor more often.

Hands down, the best Mexican food in Maine. We are blessed to have this little wonder. The fish tacos alone keep me coming back. And the quesadillas are perfectly done. Love the salsa bar too. Can't wait to go back!

Okay, so I've read a lot of reviews that say that "for Portland" these are good tacos. I've lived all over the country and eaten some amazing tacos, and these are right up there with the best of them. The carne asada, pork, and fish tacos are all amazingly flavorful, as are the quesadillas. I also would put the guacamole up against any fresh quac I've ever eaten. The salsa bar is an excellent idea as there are tons of different kinds and they are rarely available in restaurants. We are only here for a week but plan on going back to try the burrittos and other items before we leave. I have lived in several cities and been to many border towns and this is as good as any I've tasted. Really good Mexican food.

I have heard nothing but outstanding reviews of this place so I finally had to try it for myself. I suffered a true internal struggle when it came time to order. I had heard the best reviews of the tacos but was planning to get enchiladas verde. Then I saw the specials board and wanted to order the chimichanga (Deep-fried burrito? Hello, yes! One please!). I ended up reverting to the enchiladas. Stick with your gut. For $15, I got a bottle of Negra Modelo, three decently filled enchiladas, and two salsas: pico and verde. (I like verde, leave me alone.) I stole some chips from my friend to taste my pico and verde (I wish my enchiladas came with chips. Boo!). Both salsas were great! I ended up dumping the pico on my enchiladas. Those MFers were SPICY. They were a good heat, not unbearable, but hotter than I normally eat. I'm a bit of a wuss though. This place is cute, was super busy the whole time I was there, and the staff is very nice. My food came out mere minutes after ordering which is how I like it! I will 1,000% make a second return to try some new dishes. Good job, Taco Trio. You do you.

So so so yummy!! And in my opinion, the best Mexican in Portland. It's a cute little place with a nice staff. The price is a little bit more expensive than you would expect, but that is because you are paying for authenticity, quality, and freshness. You leave extremely satisfied! Plus you get to sample their enormous sauce collection, which I think is made in house for the most part. This place would be dangerous if I lived nearby!

We journey to Taco Trio on hot summer day and found it with the door open and the fans whirling at full speed. It was hot, crowded, and perfect. Mexican music mixed the scent of authentic Mexican cooking filled the air as we read the menu and made our selection. Chicken burritos all around. I like my tortillas steamed, and Taco Trio steamed them just right. Soft and chewy, squeezing the meat, vegetables, and condiments like a nice tight hug. Ahhh... So good. They have a sauce bar. I freaking LOVE sauce bars. This one was stocked with sauces of various flavors and heats, as well as sliced hot peppers and other toppings, all labeled nicely. They give you three containers per person, and while the containers are a good size, I would prefer a "take as much as you want" policy, but I get it. It's fine. We got our food to go, but the small tables looked like a nice enough place to sit and eat if you don't mind the hubbub. I imagine it can get pretty crazy with people waiting in line, using the sauce bar, and coming and going all in such a tight space. I am so glad to have mexican food just how I like it in the area. I will definitely be visiting Taco Trio again...and again.

I had heard about this place from friends finally checked it out last night. This is not a regular sit down and be served restaurant. There are many seats, but you go to the counter, order and pay and wait for your food. Very casual. They have a large selection of authentic Mexican beers as well. I ordered the carnitas burrito and it was very good. Very large and filling as well. We also ordered the guacamole. I consider myself a bit of a connoisseur since I make this dip at least once a week. Theirs is not half bad compared to other Portland Mexican restaurants I have visited. Over all I was very pleased with my dinner and look forward to checking out something different on the menu next time I go. I was told that the quesadillas are really good! If you are looking for good Mexican they are located right over the Bridge in South Portland - an easy drive from downtown.

Hooray for the BEST TACOS in the Greater Portland area!!! Simple, authentic, and delicious!!! Taco Trio not only has the best tacos around, but the BEST SALSA around, AND you get to choose from 12 different salsas!!! Unfortunately, though, you are only given a very small sample size cup per 3 tacos (or 1 with 1 tamale!) for the salsa. With so many different salsa flavors tempting you it is hard to choose just one, but when you do choose, you won't be sorry! Taco Trio also has a delicious array of authentic beverages, which rotate. The assortment usually consists of a horchata, a tamarind drink, and an agua fresca: I have seen watermelon agua fresca and lime agua fresca (the lime tasted like limeade and was PERFECT)! Some complaints: 1. Their hours: They are currently open for lunch and for dinner until 9pm. Which seems great until you try to grab a mid afternoon taco and they have just closed their doors :( 2. Why in the WORLD would they just give you a tiny sample size salsa cup with so many wonderful salsa choices!!!??? 3. Serving ware: Although I do enjoy the simplicity and practicality of the plastic baskets the tacos are served in, the cups for drinks and the utensils are plastic and disposable- which I do not enjoy. 4. Veggie Options: There ARE vegetarian options, such a their mushroom taco and their nopales (tender cactus) tacos, but they are lacking in flavor compared to their meaty counterparts. Between the 2 veggie taco options, the nopales is WAY tastier, but they are frequently out of it. Did I mention they have the BEST TACOS IN THE GREATER PORTLAND AREA!!!???

I'm pretty sure I've had everything on the menu but the burrito (too big!) and every dish works. I lived in L.A. for 10 years and S.F. for 15 --- this is as close as it gets. Straight forward, fresh ingredients with authentic flavors. The pork, chicken and beef is each perfectly seasoned and the fish taco is wonderful. There is also a vegetarian option that is very tasty. Tacos, sopes, quesadillas are always on the menu and they usually have freshly made tamales and enchiladas. Now they have beer on tap as well as beer, soda and sparkling water in the can. NO other so called Mexican restaurant in the Portland area comes close!

I can't believe I forgot to write a review for this gem! Delicious fresh excellent well done mexican in South Portland. It was a humid day and Assunta dragged Lucy and I with the lures of mexican and a trip to goodwill. We were pleasantly surprised. It seems mexican is always amazing if it's in an unassuming locale. If you blinked you would certainly miss it, but blink so you miss it and I get your seat. It's tiny, maybe six or eight tables? However, you could get it to go and eat by the bay nearby. Excellent condiment bar.....grilled pineapple anyone? Superb selection of fresh juices.....rivaled my hotel in mexico! So here is my suggestion, go do some thrifting in the goodwill near Shaw's, work up an appetite, go have some authentic tacos and if you save space have a frozen custard for dessert at red's dairy freeze. You might want to pick up a new belt and bigger pants at goodwill....

I thought fo sho I'd be the first to review this little gem, but people beat me to it! That's a testament to how Yelp is taking over the world and what a great new restaurant this is! My mother and I stopped in today, Wednesday, during lunch time and it was bumpin. That makes me happy, because I feel like this part of town gets forgotten about sometimes. But - without a doubt - this is some damn good mexican food. Portland has been lacking in the Mexican food department forever. After moving back from Colorado where you could get some authentic Mexican food on every corner, we've been craving some badly. Taco Trio may just hit the spot. My mom and I both ordered the 3 tacos (corn tortillas) for 9 bucks. I got the fish, the carne asada, and the pollo asado. My mom got the mushroom, the puerco en salsa, and the carne asada. And two drinks - came to about 24$ I think. The someone chirped up from behind the counter. They had run out of fish. Darn. I switched to the mushroom. While we were waiting, we enjoyed some fresh limeade (there was also horchata and tamarind juice). When they gave us our food to go, the server brought out some guac and said "try some guac," i'm assuming because they ran out of fish. I'd take it! They also have an extensive salsa collection. You get one 2oz container with the meal, and extra 1$ for each one after that. All in all, very flavorful, nicely marinated beef, nice tender chicken in my tacos. We'll totally be going back - although I would love to see tamales and fajitas on their menu.

They have a salsa bar that is amazing. The food is very tasty, much better than many local Mexican places in the area. They have some beer on tap & a nice selection of bottled beer. Very casual. I really enjoyed that I had not problem finding a vegetarian option & was able to order it without cheese. Often at places, when you take away the meat and cheese options from the menu, you leave hungry. That was not the case here at all. I enjoyed my meal very much & would encourage anyone to check it out.

Love this place !!! Got the three tacos for $9 and was amazed at all three ... My favorite was the carne asada ,but what makes this place is the salsa bar ...12 different salsa's all there from habanero hot to mild pico de gallo . Go for lunch when you're on the other side of the casco bay bridge , you won't be disappointed !!!

Totally, totally awesome! Authentic Mexican food with really friendly service and it is an independently owned business which is nice, it's not a chain. The food is so fresh it's amazing! The salsas and sauces are delicious, the meats are fantastic and it's just really great food. It's inexpensive and it's really great. There are some chairs outdoors but you can't have a beer outside which is unfortunate since it would be a nice place to sit and relax with a beer.

Your search for real Mexican food is OVER! Taco Trio in South Portland is the BEST Mexican restaurant anywhere north of Boston. They could serve sangria...that's my only gripe. Finally some authentic Mexican food with enough subtle, mysterious flavors that will have you fully engaged trying to figure out the spices they use. Our tacos were an amazing flavor experience...I can't wait to go back and try every taco on the menu! Taco Trio is small and a little out of the way. Perfect reason to escape the usual Portland melee and cross the bridge!

Find me a better Mexican joint in the greater Portland area. Try it. Please. They have a condiment bar with hot sauce, sour cream, grilled pineapples, and other things of amazingness. The food is fresh and delicious. Everything I've ever wanted in a Mexican place is right here. Go. Kinda makes me want to move to S. Portland.

In a word: Outstanding. This place seems to get a few bad reviews via Urbanspoon and I can't for the life of me imagine why. Upon first bite of anything you eat, your eyes will probably close in a moment of pure bliss and in that moment, you could almost believe you were at a roadside taqueria in Mexico. This has all the feel of a great neighborhood eatery and food and atmosphere are very homey. It is relatively small inside and not exactly suited for a dinner party, but the food found here is far superior to El Rayo or Zapoteca. I had the 3 tacos for $9.00 (taco trio!) with the Chorizo, the BBQ goat and the Carne Asada (steak). Every one of these puppies was packed, doubled up with 2 corn tortillas each (crucial) and served in a basket with a side of corn chips (in about 6 minutes). The goat was delicious but slightly chewy and stringy, which is pretty typical, the chorizo is cooked with potatoes and was also wonderful, but man o man, that carne asada...a bit charred, with that just fired on the grill taste, heaven. I was also super excited to see a host of different bottled beers available in the cooler too. Tecate in a bottle? Yes, please! It's still hard to compare to taquerias out west, but this place is just about as good as it gets in this state. Putting it another way, I just live over the bridge in Portland, but upon arriving home, had to look up what it would cost to live right next door to Taco Trio.

Best burrito I have ever had. I daydream about the carne asada! Salsa bar is fresh and delicious. Fire roasted pineapple salsa...yummmmy. Portlanders, cross the bridge! Reasonably priced and plenty of parking on the street.

This place is the best. The food is super fresh, the kitchen is wide open and you can see everything being made. Also the salsas are AMAZING. I especially like the mango and anything spicy. The food is so inexpensive and so delicious. Also it doesn't take long at all. I usually order the 3 taco deal and I always order their specials especially if they have mole. I love the steak taco with pineapple salsa, fish taco with the spicy orange salsa, and the mushroom and herbs taco. They also have great quesadillas and burritos. Really everything is good. They serve horchata and loads of great beers. Also the atmosphere is good and the service is reasonably friendly.

Very fast and very good food. There's a salsa bar that has salsas with many different levels of heat and flavor and they're all fresh. If you don't like heat, stay away from the orange (habañero) :-) We go here often to grab tacos and I would definitely recommend it to every taco lover.

FINALLY. After moving back to Maine from Dallas, this place has really answered my cravings for legit tacos. The chips are great (the flour ones are really addictive... I recommend getting a basket of the mixed chips), the guac is outstanding, and I could probably order the pastor tacos every visit and be totally happy. So, so glad they're here.

Ordered one of the especiales which was a roasted chicken enchilada. Though it was a bit pricey ($11 per plate), the meal was delicious. When I come back to Portland, I will bring friends and eat here again.

Best Mexican in Maine! Best Salsa in Maine! Plus a great selection of beers. If you are looking for an evening out sharing margaritas this is not the place. The restaurant is bare bones. That is what I like about Taco Trio. It is all about the food. Under $10 will get you completely satisfied.

Finally a decent fast-food Mexican place. First off, they offer a choice of black and pinto beans...which their competitor across the bridge does not. Then, they actually have decent chips and salsa that are actually salted...unlike their competitor. My only real complaint is how stingy they are about the salsa. They have a salsa bar, yippee...but it costs a $1 for a measly little cup...and they expect you to only need one for 3 tacos!!! Can we say impossible??? They need to come up with a better solution for that because it's turning people off. What their strength is...their salsa....may actually be their demise. Too bad it's only open for lunch and that there is no bar. But I'm happy we now have a neighborhood Mexican place!!!

We've been searching for a decent tacqueria since moving back to Maine from the San Francisco Bay Area and finally, finally, we found one at Taco Trio. I'd prefer grilled tortillas - they steam them here - but I'm not gonna quibble. This place gets it right. No lettuce anywhere near the joint, and the meats were well seasoned and grilled to perfection. Their selection of salsas is to be admired as well. Definitely on the list for a return trip.

Tres tacos, para mi. This 4 star rating is only somewhat generous... As another review stated, they just opened and one can tell they are still trying to get the thing under control. When I went we got there just in time... 10 min after we ordered, there was a line out the door. Orders were a little messy, and I lost a taco de pescado somewhere in the shuffle. But you know what? I didn't care... I was distracted by how awesome the food was. I ordered steak, goat, steamed cactus, pork, and fish tacos (yea, eating problem?). I also got a chorizo sopes. They were all good, with the steak, fish and chorizo being the stand out favorites. The salsas were probably one of the best parts of the whole affair. A large fresh salsa bar, with the hot salsa actually being pretty hot (which isn't always the case). It's been a bit since I was there, so I can't remember which specific salsas were my favorites exactly, but the salsa verde was excellent, and another mango-chipotle (I think) was also delicious. I also ordered the horchata aqua fresca. Delicious. Definitely get one of the aqua frescas while you're there. Long story short- if you're looking for some solid quick tacos that probably beat the pants off most of what we have in the mexican-food-deprived city of ours, check out Taco Trio on a Friday or Saturday night, or some day for lunch. I am hoping their dinner hours expand sometime soon.

Alright the place is open and I gotta say it is everything I could have hoped. Just had a pastor burrito and it was delicious. The rice was a little over cooked so it was soft, they just opened you gotta give em time. I ate the whole thing and I am not hungry and not stuffed. Everything tasted fresh and was of higher quality then I've had at other taquirias in California and Oregon. That salsa bar is top notch portion control is required to offer quality fresh salsa and I had more then enough to finish my meal. My burrito came with a few fresh tortilla chips which was nice touch. The price was the only sticking point but it is certainly on par with mexican food I have had in the area. I am used to extremely cheap tacos and burritos, $1.50 to $2.00 for tacos on the west coast. But we are a long way from mexico, they got a good product and that is what everyone else charges.

There have been more than a few day that I have arranged my work schedule to be in the Taco Trio neighborhood at lunch time. The tacos are great, I love the Horchata and the salsa bar. Only 4 stars because the amount of chips served with the tacos is consistently light although very good, and one time I ordered the traditional "Pork Head taco" which I felt was inedible. I cant wait till they introduce Taco Cinco

As much as I love the Portland food scene one of the things it lacks in my opinion is diversity. I couldn't be happier to finally have quality Mexican food available. I've been to Taco Trio twice now and loved it both times. First trip in I had a carnitas burrito that hit all the right buttons. More recently I got to try carne asada tacos and was not disappointed. About the only thing I would change is those little salsa cups. I would rather be charged more for my meal and be able to apply sauces at my leisure than deal with those things, but as long as the food stays good I will suffer through the cup system.

YESSS! Wonderful tacos and a salsa bar in S. Portland. I loved the Chicken taco w/mole sauce and the Pastor (pork in adobo-pineapple sauce) taco, both of which were wonderful with the mild and flavorful mango salsa as well as the medium grilled pineapple salsa. I'm looking forward to returning to try their other menu items. The friendly cashier will give you a sample of anything you would like to try before you order if you ask. I tried the Carnitas - seared pork - which she says simmers and sears in a large pot throughout the day. It was delicious. While you get a small contained for something at the salsa bar to go with your dish, you can pay $1 for an extra salsa. These are not chincy, liquidy salsas, they are chunky and very fresh accompaniments. I was hoping they might offer a grilled fish taco in addition to the battered fish, but at this time, they don't. The cashier said she would suggest it to the owner who is still tweaking the menu. Other menu items include: Sopes (handmade fried tortilla bowl w/beans, queso cotija, sour cream and a choice of filling - chorizo, beef, cactus, pork or mushrooms); burritos; quesadillas, tamales and various sides. The beverages are incredibly refreshing -- I tried canteloupe, lime and tamarind - separately, of course! I was given a small cup to try them all before I decided which one to get. Another offering was made with coconut and milk. I will recommend this place to all my friends!

Taco shack with a few seats. Good selection of mexican meats including goat. I had taco's which were good. They have several salsa's served Ala carte. I didn't think their hot salsa was very hot but it had good flavor. They offer authentic latin beers. The only bad thing was the terrible Mexican pop music they had blaring.

Taco trio is an unassuming tiny place in South Portland that has become a go-to spot for my kids and I for a fast, delicious lunch. I cannot wait to try all the offerings, even the goat. They don't have a huge menu, which I think ads to the quality of what they do serve. I got the chicken burrito today, which is generously huge with chips on the side. The two things that make those place special for me are the quality of the marinated meat and the salsa bar. When you're eating the food here, you realize you have found something special. I cannot wait for them to finish the road work in front of the building so access is easier. As a teacher in the neighborhood, I plan many many more trips to Taco Trio in the future. Outstanding.

Great food, reasonably priced. This is the best Mexican food in the area. It doesn't have the ambiance that some of the Portland places might (no big outdoor area with live music) but for quick, fresh and tasty food, it's the best spot by far. The salsa bar is a huge highlight. The pineapple salsa is a must.

Stopped in Saturday evening after driving by the place a few times before. I checked it out on yelp and it got good reviews which I say were right on the money. Its a small "dive" but the food was fresh and cooked to order. I tried two types of tacos and they were right on. The fish tacos were fresh and tasty, they use sort of a pickled cabbage on top and it was different but good, the Barbacoa was right on also . My wife and I tried the Slopes (sort of a corn dough bowl) filled with different meats I tried the Carnitas and it was very good other then the bowl not being totally cook through. The rice was good not over done and been sitting around all day. They have a salsa bar that has several heat levels and selections it was good but they were very busy and the bar got whipped out. Try the mango salsa it was different but delicious. It is a little expensive with four of us costing a bit over $60. I'm definitely coming back.

Interesting little place. Staff is awesome. Prices are very fair. I tried the chicken taco, pulled pork taco and goat bbq taco. I now know that goat meat really isn't my thing, but it was cooked very well and everything else was delicious. I definitely recommend Taco Trio.

Taco Trio is a godsend. I've been waiting for a real-deal Mexican taqueria to open in Portland for years. This place has a lot of promise. If they included slices of lime and radish with the tacos and loosened up a little with the salsa bar (currently the first 2oz cup is free, but it costs $1 for each additional 2oz cup), I would give them five stars.

Born and raised in California, Taco Trio comes closest to real Mexican food of all the places I've been in the Portland area. The sopas are fabulous as are the tamales, the tacos and the quesadilla. Their meat- steak, chicken and pork - is so flavorful with just the right amount of Mexican spice to add to the appeal. Their pick your own salsa from the salsa bar allows customers to add to the flavor -- only thing missing is beer but you can get sodas and traditional fruit drinks which are almost as good!

Good Food. But expensive. As a California native, I'm used to high quality, authentic, Mexican food. Living in Portland has been a challenge. I haven't been impressed with any of the other Mexican joints in town, so I had pretty low expectations for this one. But... I was wrong. This place is serving up delicious food, and it feels like a place back home... small tables, basic decorations, homemade beverages, and a salsa bar. YUM! As others have noted, the salsa bar is very restricted! You only get one tiny cup with your meal- another is $1. The salsas (especially the blackened tomato and mango) are fantastic, and really add a lot of extra flavor to the burritos/tacos. Out in CA, and even down in Kittery, there is no limit on salsas. Do they really think we'll take excessive amounts? Maybe they shouldn't have unlimited cups, but refills should be allowed. I'll also complain (briefly) about the cost. A burrito is $9!! Plus $1 for sour cream, plus $2 for guac. That's a $10-12 burrito. This may be reasonable at a nice sit down restaurant, but for a "order at the counter, get it in a basket or bag" type of place, I feel like it's overpriced. This same burrito, on any street corner in CA, is $6-7. So, in summary, the food is delicious. If they reduced their prices (a bit), and gave me more salsa, I'd be there weekly. As is, I'll probably be there monthly:-)

So, so good. Thank you Taco Trio for coming to down! Carnitas, pastor, carne asada - so hard to decided. The salsas are clearly made with love.

I love this place! I'm so lucky that it's on my route home from work. I'm obsessed with their fish tacos. I get them almost every time, and they never disappoint. Consistency is big in my book. The carne asada burrito is my other favorite. The employees are super friendly and I love being able to choose my sides of salsas. I rarely consider ever going anywhere else for 'south of the border' fare in Portland. I go here so often that I have their number programmed in my phone.

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
